How media portrays candidates for public office has an impact on public perception of those candidates, and ultimately on the outcomes of elections. When women run for office, media coverage at the national level emphasizes their gender and “novelty” — but is this true on a local level? Researchers Tamara Power-Drutis and Dr. Kiana Scott (Ph.D., Political Communication) are conducting an evaluation of Seattle’s 2017 general election coverage to garner insight on how gendered and novelty media coverage played out on a local level as well as steps that both media and news consumers can take to increase media literacy around gendered and novelty coverage.
